klara kiss proof lips in sexy marsala

Do you have a certain dress or perfume that’s your go to? You know, the one that will always fit, the one that will always get you compliments, the one that will turn heads? Well, I have a lipstick like that . . . .

Klara is an Australian brand that I’ve noticed has been on the market for a couple of years now. Hailing from Werribee, and hanging out at your local Coles supermarket, it may not have got your attention, but you should really pay close attention to Klara because it is going places.

I have a few items in their range of cosmetics and I must say I am impressed by the quality of the products. The pigmentation is superb and comparable to some of the high end brands out there. Even better, Klara often runs promotions when you can buy the brand’s products at heavy discount. Indeed, this is how Kiss Proof Lips in Sexy Marsala made it into my stash.

VOLUME/SIZE 8ml/ 0.27 fl. oz.
FORMULATION  Quick set liquid lipstick
LONGEVITY  ~2h without touch ups
PACKAGING Clear perspex tube with black cap and doe-foot applicator
RANGE 16 shades

(01 Golden Rose, 02 Natural Pink, 03 Passion Pink, 04 Neon Hot Pink, 05 Flaming Red, 06 Vintage Burgundy, 07 Sienna Nude, 08 Neon Tangerine, 09 Watermelon Kiss, 10 Madgenta, 11 Psycho Violet, 12 Lilac Lover, 13 Mix, 14 Chocolate Temptation, 15 Totally Nude, 16 Sexy Marsala)

I bought this in shade #16 Sexy Marsala.

I like the sleek packaging for two reasons: one, I can see the colour and quantity of product clearly. Secondly, it is a regular shape which makes for easy stacking. As much as I love my Guerlain Rouge G L’extraits, they are such a pain to stand up in my little lipstick containers.

What I don’t like is that the shade name is nowhere on the tube. Once you’ve tossed the box it comes in (which does say, Sexy Marsala), all you have is a number on the bottom of the tube. As I mentioned before, I have a few of these tubes so I would’ve appreciated better labelling on the packaging.

Taking inspiration from the 2015 Pantone colour of the year, Sexy Marsala is a shade of deep red wine, just as the name suggests; evoking a rich, mysterious and gem like quality. No purple there, it is closer to dark blood and cherries. It is indescribably beautiful, perfect for the cool seasons and you know when you put it on that it is going to get you attention. I think it would be flattering on all skin tones, but it would suit tan complexions  the most without looking harsh.

Although the formula is creamy, I find it difficult to apply cleanly because it is such a bold colour. You can’t afford to make mistakes (like I did, see photos). I use a lipliner but even then, it can be a little tricky. It is best to avoid getting too much product on the doe-foot applicator and to apply a thin even layer. Easier said than done – application can be a little patchy, particularly if you have chapped lips. The colour payoff is great and you only need a single layer for full coverage. I don’t think it would layer very well in any case. As the day wear, it does settle into lines and feather and bleed a little.

Not for the faint of heart, or the dry of lip, Sexy Marsala dries in a few minutes into a matte finish which still retains some tack. It is not uncomfortable but as with most matte lipsticks, you’re best to exfoliate and moisturise your lips well and thorough before application. It will accentuate dry lips otherwise and can be extra drying after a meal.

Contrary to the name, Kiss Proof Lips in Sexy Marsala is not really kiss proof. It did transfer to cups and napkins when eating and drinking. Although it doesn’t quite disappear, it fades in patches after consumption of a meal. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take too well to reapplication because this starts to look strange unless you completely remove the previous layer of lipstick. Which is a little disappointing because I have this lipstick in another shade which really is kiss proof – it just won’t budge!

If I go without eating or drinking, it lasts me about 4 hours before I need to neaten it up again. Otherwise, it requires refresh once you’ve cleared your plates. Taking it off can be a little messy because it stains slightly. Remember to apply lots of lip balm after.

I adore the colour and always get tons of compliments whenever I wear Sexy Marsala. Which is what keeps me reaching for the lipstick, particularly during the autumn and winter months. Until I remember, too late, that I have chronically dry lips and this lipstick starts to look quite shady as it flakes and fades away in patches. But I think it is worth the pain of applying lipbalm every hour and carefully touching up. And maybe not eating lunch.

  1. LOL @ #fromthestash!
Good lord though this looks great on you! I can see exactly why it would turns heads and probably cause a couple accidents (stay indoors!) when you wear this.
Too bad about the reapplication note though. Good thing you’re a pro with this stuff so you know how to finesse your way around that. I’d just look like a clown

  2. And I agree, there’s really something with matte liquid lipsticks that’s not for the faint of heart. They look very opaque and pop-y. You have to have guts to wear darker matte liquid lipsticks.

    1. See, I don’t reckon dark matte colours are as intimidating as they seem. They just need their wearer to ‘own’ it.
As long as you’re loving the colour you’re wearing and comfortable in it, I think anyone can wear any colour.
Don’t believe the crap they write in magazines about vivid colours needing an extra helping of courage. All you need is a steady hand, a good lip liner and some practice.
Neon lipsticks though, are another matter. . . .

You’re right, Klara liquid lipsticks are super pigmented and wear well (great bang for buck).
